Create is the word

In February, I said that my word for the Year of the Groon 63 was “create”.

I’m a couple of months into Groon 63 and it’s been going well. As usual, I was a bit slow getting started with my creating. But by mid-March, I had a rhythm going of writing 100 words a day or 500 words a week.

It doesn’t sound like much. But for someone who hasn’t done much writing in the last few years, a little is much better than nothing.

Keeping the bar low has allowed me to stay consistent.

It’s like building muscle. Getting back into shape after a long break is always painful. It’s like starting right from the beginning again.

Of course, writing isn’t the only creative thing I do.

I perform in plays and sing in a choir. Those activities give me other opportunities to create as well.

Today, I’ll be meeting up with Sean and Matt, two of the basses from Vocal Point choir. We’re going to create some videos to help promote our upcoming show Mega 80’s Mixtape on May 22 and 23. We’ll be singing songs from the 80s at the concert, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.

If you’re going to be in the Hamilton area on those dates, you can buy some tickets here.

I’m looking forward to making these videos. They don’t have to be good. Just making them will be fun.

It brings me back to my youth, making movies and videos with friends.

Creating with a camera was really the first medium that I played around with. It was the thing I loved doing when I was old enough to choose what to do. More so than writing, even.

As always, I remind myself: It’s the process, not the product.

And being creative doesn’t mean that you need to create anything big or magnificent.

Just get out there and try something new.
