Before the Workday Leeches the Juice

I started May writing a post about creativity. Here we are into the final week of the month and that’s the only post that I’ve written so far.

But it has been a very creative month! I’ve spent my creativity in other areas than blog post writing.

It’s been a great month for my playwriting. I edited a bunch of videos for my choir. And I prepped to be one of the emcees for our concert, this past weekend.

I’ve logged over 3,000 words this month for my new play so far! That’s astounding to me! For the last year, I’ve struggled to get myself to write 100 words a day consistently.

Without a doubt, it’s committing to the small writing goals that kept me on track. Starting with 100 words a day. And when possible, getting it done early in the day. Preferably before I leave for work.

I’m cultivating the habit of going upstairs to my office, first thing when I wake up. It’s not a habit yet. But the day feels much better on the mornings that I do it. My quota is met before the work day leeches my creative juices.

As mentioned in my last post, I filmed some promo videos for my choir with my fellow basses, Sean and Matt. The session was a couple of hours to shoot, but then the editing took much more time.

In the end, I edited six videos to promote Vocal Point choir’s show Mega 80s Mixtape. I was able to edit those in the evenings.

Although they’re creative work, they take a different kind of creativity than writing. Editing in the evenings seemed to work fine. Plus, it prevented me from watching TV during the week.

Sean, Matt, and I were asked to be the emcees for the concert, so that involved some creativity figuring out what to do between the songs. More writing and rehearsing.

Plus, I had to work on my songs for the show.

Starting the day with something creative and then ending it with something creative made the weeks fly by. And it provided an extra lift to the day.

It feels great to be creative in the day instead of scrolling on my phone or watching TV.
