Reading Problems

I’ve had a real problem finishing books that I’ve started reading in the last year. I’m not sure if this is an age issue or an “interest” issue.

But I find it weird. I’m usually a voracious reader.

Last year, I planned on reading 26 books. I even listed a few of the books I intended to read.

Guess what? I read twelve books last year. Just under half of the amount I planned to read.

That’s probably the least number of books I’ve read in a year. Since I learned to read!

And only one of the books was from my proposed list. (It was Do The Work by Steven Pressfield, in case you’re curious.)

Abandoning my proposed reading list isn’t unusual.

Usually, I’ll choose to read a book because someone in a podcast or blog post recommends it. And my interests are dynamic, depending on whatever subject I happen to be pursuing in the moment. I’m easily drawn down a rabbit hole exploring a topic.

I usually read non-fiction. But last year, most of my reading was fiction. I worked my way through many of Mick Herron’s books. I love the Slow Horses series!

It’s funny though. A few of the books I took out of the library many times.

Because the subject was interesting and I enjoyed what I read. But I’d put the book down and then not pick it up until it was time to return it. What the heck?

My TV watching was a factor. Obviously. But it’s always been a factor. And I still manage to read a lot of books. Except for last year.

What are my reading habits going to be like this year?

I’m not going to fret over it. But I’m going to try to schedule some reading time to get back on track. Let’s see how many books I get around to reading in 2026…
