Getting Started Again

Wow. It’s been a month and a half since my last post.

Usually, that wouldn’t be so uncommon. But I just finished a challenge to post almost daily for a year.

It took longer, of course. But in the end I got 365 posts done.

But I thought it would be easy for me to transition to weekly posts from almost daily posts.

Not so.

Some habits are hard.

And once the goal is met, it’s easy to stop them.

Blogging is a hard habit for me.

I’ve been able to challenge myself to write for 30 days, 90 days, and 365 days. I’m not always consistent, but in the end I reached my target.

And as soon as the target was met, my posting came to a grinding halt.

Other habits are easy to start and then fizzle out.

I started doing the Miracle Morning as a habit a few years ago.

And I was consistent for about three years. It really was a miracle!

But then I made it more complicated and it fizzled out.

Still, three solid years is nothing to dismiss.

I could reignite the habit again, if I tried.

But some habits need no work at all.

I weigh myself daily. It’s a habit.

I’ve been doing it for over ten years.

When I go away on vacation, I usually don’t weigh myself. There’s no scale around! But I get right back into the habit as soon as I get home.

It’s part of my morning routine. Out of bed, step on the scale.

Why is that habit so durable? What makes it so easy to be consistent with it?

The actual process is simple. Step on the scale.

But I don’t find blogging to be that much more difficult. It is more time consuming. But not by a lot.

It involves effort. And there is a product.

There is more thinking involved. And that’s the real downfall.

When there’s time to think about it, there’s time to put it off.

Stepping on a scale is quick. It’s easy. And it’s done.

Blogging feels easy, when I’m doing it. When I’m in it. But it’s the getting started part that is a killer.

I’m going to try to write a post a week for the rest of the year. I can write more, of course; but I’m going to try to stick to a weekly post.

And to do that, I will start my blog post first thing on Sunday mornings. That doesn’t mean I’ll post it then. I will “start it” then.

Let’s see how this goes.
