There’s still a month and a half left in 2024. But I’m wondering if I can call the best book that I read this year?
Something better might still come up. But I’ve been thinking about this book a lot since I finished reading it.
If you’ve been following the blog, you can probably guess what it is:
The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter.
We are genetically programmed to make things easier for ourselves.
And that’s a good thing.
But sometimes we make things too easy. And often, it’s harming us.
We aren’t as active as our bodies are designed to be.
We eat more than our bodies need.
And we don’t engage our minds as much as we should.
Since reading the book, I’ve tried to push myself a little to embrace the discomfort.
The discomfort of feeling hungry when I don’t need to eat but “want” to.
The discomfort of doing some exercise to move my body.
The discomfort of writing when it would be easier to sit in front of the TV.
I’m not always successful but I’m trying.
It’s through discomfort that we grow.
That we push ourselves.
It’s good to be comfortable.
But it’s also good to be uncomfortable some of the time, too.
