Digging for Gold

I’m a deadlines kind of person.

It’s often difficult for me to focus on a task unless there’s a deadline.

Especially when it comes to writing.

The Hamilton Fringe has a playwriting contest which I’ve applied to a few times.

I even won it once.

I’ve intended to apply more times than I have, though. Because I keep missing the deadline.

I wanted to apply this year.

I made notes to myself months ago.

I set target dates for milestones.

But I had trouble getting started on a project.

I’m working on one right now.

But it’s no where near a first draft.

It’s still a blob of ideas and random images.

And then I thought: Why don’t I dust off an old script that I haven’t submitted before?

I found one. But it needs a little tweaking…

The problem? The deadline was last night.

And then a miracle happened…

Or was it woo woo?

The deadline was extended a week.

Now, I have time to dust off my play and give it a little tweak.

I don’t expect to win.

The exercise is to get back into the game of submitting plays.

Of putting my work out there.

I’m still moving forward on my current project. But I can’t rush it.

Each work has its own gestation process.

It feels good though, to have something to submit.

Maybe there’s more gold to find in some of the other plays I’ve written?
