Dyeing for the Part

Ah, the things we do for the shows we’re in.

When we agree to be in a play, we know there will be sacrifices.

I mean, we know that we’re going to give up weeks of time at rehearsals.

And many hours at home, dedicated to learning lines.

But sometimes we do even more.

For the first time, I’m dyeing my hair for a role.

The role doesn’t require me to do it.

But I thought that darkening my hair would help.

In community theatre, casting is more flexible than professional theatre.

Sometimes actors are a little older than the part they’re playing.

Sometimes they’re a little younger than the part they’re playing.

And sometimes it’s both.

In our show, it’s both.

So, I figured it would help a little bit to get rid of the grey for a bit.

It’s funny.  I don’t mind doing it for the stage.

It’s like make up.

But I’m going to feel a little self conscious going out in public.

When I’m not in the show.

People that haven’t seen me for a little while will do a double take.

Will they think I’m doing it for vanity?

Am I?

I will admit that part of me always wanted to dye my hair for a role.

But I thought that would be before I went grey.

Be careful what you wish for…

This darker haired version of me will only be around for a short while, though.

I’m probably going to cut my hair short after the play ends.

But who knows?

Maybe I’ll like this younger looking version of me?

Ha ha!
