Revisiting Comfort

I finished reading The Comfort Crisis a couple of weeks ago, but I’m going back to read it again.

I listened to most of the book with Kindle Assistive Reader.  Which is great for listening to the book in the car.

But it’s not so great when you want to go back and savour something. Or highlight an idea.

I’ve been thinking about the book a lot, anyway.

I’ve been using the following mantra to keep me focused:

Be Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable.

It has applications to everything.

I use it mostly to stay focused on my weight loss attempts.

But it helps with other things, too.

Learning my lines.

Learning my music.

Writing.

It’s normal for us to look for ways to do things more effectively.

More efficiently.

To make things easier.

But we’ve gotten too good at making things easy.

And many of us are reluctant to do the work to get important things done.

Because it’s difficult.  And we don’t like difficult.

We want the easy button for everything.

Unfortunately, we don’t grow or become resilient by doing the easy stuff.

We need to push ourselves to grow.

One of the biggies for me is defaulting to TV mode at night.

Because it’s easy.  It’s comfortable to sit down and watch TV.

Even though I have lots of stuff to do.

This week, I’m going to try to be a little more uncomfortable.

And get some things done!
