Line Running

After a show opens, there’s usually a “line run”. Between the end of one week’s performances and the start of the following week’s performances.

It’s when the actors say their lines to each other but usually there isn’t any action or movement. Often everyone is just sitting around.

Or it’s a Zoom call.

The tricky part is finding a day and time that works for everyone.

When you are in rehearsals, your schedule is restricted and focused on the show. But once the show opens, everyone tries to fit in those obligations or things that got put off.

The only day that worked for everyone this week was Wednesday. It wasn’t optimal for me because I had an audition. But we made it work.

I started the line run while driving home from the audition. Thank you, miracles of technology!

I’m not always a fan of line runs. I use an app call Script Rehearser, so I do a lot of my line work with that. And in-person line runs can be annoying if you have a long way to go.

But I look at them as being supportive of my fellow actors.

And they can be fun.

You say your lines, but there’s a bit of kibbitzing going on, too.

The main purpose is to refresh your memory.

After a week of performances and weeks of rehearsals, those lines are in there. In your memory. But it helps to give them a little nudge before the next week of performances.

Especially between the first and second week.

Generally, they aren’t as important between the second and third week. Because they are usually firmly established by then.
