Changing it Up

I’m still having trouble getting going on my playwriting. It’s weird.

First, I was trying to write 5 lines of dialogue a day.

Didn’t happen.

Then it was 5 sentences a day. Similar but less.

Still didn’t happen.

Now, I’m hoping to write one sentence a day.

I’ve been able to meet that target two days in a row!

Awesome.

Yes, I’m busy with other things but that hasn’t stopped me in the past.

One of my most productive times writing plays was when I was coaching two soccer teams. And acting in plays. Plus working full time.

I had to be focused with my time.

But I wanted to write. I needed to write.

I still want to write. Write plays, I mean. But the drive is less strong.

The trick is getting that flywheel going.

If it takes one sentence a day for a month. Or one sentence a day for two months. Then, so be it.

You change the target to something you can hit.

I thought I could hit five sentences a day. I was wrong.

Let’s see if I can write one sentence a day. Consistently.

It’s the consistent action that gets the flywheel moving. The consistent act of writing.

And once it starts going, the writing will take care of itself.
