Chasing The Aurora Borealis

Number three on my list of thirty things to do in the next five years is to see the Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis.

I thought my chances were pretty good when we went to northern British Columbia. To visit my son and his girlfriend.

But we didn’t see the northern lights.

I was disappointed.

If I didn’t see them up there, my odds of seeing them this year were slim.

And then on Friday, Deb told us we were going to try to see the Aurora Borealis!

We had just finished seeing her perform in Listen to Your Mother. And she had read that the northern lights should be visible because of recent solar activity.

The trick was you had to get to somewhere dark. Populated areas have too much light pollution.

We got into the car and headed up Highway 6. We were going to go towards Valens Conservation area. Hoping that it would be dark enough.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t. We just saw the sky.

I was ready to keep looking, but Deb and Tara have earlier bedtimes than me. I was overruled.

We had fun driving even if we didn’t catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

The next day, we saw beautiful photos that people were able to take.

I was less disappointed at missing the Aurora Borealis on Friday than when we were out west.

Because now I know that it’s possible to see them here.

I don’t have to go hundreds of kilometers to the north.

I must pay attention. For the next time they might be visible.

And pick a few places that would be dark enough.

But it’s possible.

The chase is on!
