The Night Before the ATB

Tomorrow thousands of people will be milling around here getting ready to run!

It’s the night before the big run. The Around The Bay road race is tomorrow.

It’s a 30km route. But this year it got extended to 34 kilometers because it’s at a different venue.

What’s an extra 4km when you’re running 30km?

For me, it’s a lot. It could be an extra forty minutes of running.

But wait. There’s more! Apparently, a sink hole was discovered on the route, so there will be a detour.

What does that mean? It means about an extra 1.4 kilometers!

Oh, boy. Now the 30km run is actually 35.4km.

At this point, the goal is just to finish.

Especially after my IT band started acting up last weekend.

But it will be exciting, too.

I won’t be running alone this weekend. There will be thousands of people getting ready for the 9:30am start time.

I know people running the 15km route. And I’m sure I’ll bump into someone I know running the 30km (I mean 34km… I mean the 35.4km) route.

I’ve got to keep reminding myself to run “my” race. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the crowd. Before you know it, you’re running with the crowd at a pace that isn’t sustainable.

It’s even more important that I stick to my pace because of my IT band problems.

But the training and anticipation are all done. The day is almost here.

I’ve laid out my running gear. I’ve got my gels and protein bars.

I’ll go to bed early. Early-ish…

All that’s left to do is show up.

And run.
